Part-time work cuts study time, may be damaging to GCSE grades and might reduce motivation in lessons, new research suggests .

There was widespread praise for millionaire parents David and Victoria Beckham when it was revealed that they had sent their eldest son, Brooklyn, to do a few weekend shifts in a west London coffee shop. And Jamie Oliver won approval for insisting that he’ll be keeping his eldest two daughters “real” by encouraging them to work in his new pub on Saturdays.

Teachers yesterday backed a boycott of controversial tests for four-year-olds due to be introduced in England next year. Delegates at the National Union of Teachers conference in Harrogate voted unanimously in favour of persuading schools to refuse to take part in a pilot of the test this September – leading to a boycott of the tests in 2016.

UK. Sevenoaks is split over much-delayed decision on controversial grammar school annexe

If Weald of Kent Grammar School is given the go-ahead for an annexe in leafy Sevenoaks, it will be the first selective state school to open in 50 years. And many local pupils aren’t happy about it, says Sarah Cassidy. The waiting is over for nearly 5,000 11-year-olds who were offered coveted places at Kent grammar schools last month. But in the prosperous commuter town of Sevenoaks, Kent, the waiting goes on for those looking to the education secretary, Nicky Morgan, to rule on whether a grammar school can open a new annexe – in what would be, if approved, the first “new” selective school in 50 years.

UK. A-level in leisure studies to be scrapped

Anthropology, citizenship studies, home economics, pure mathematics, performing arts and science in society will also be dropped by 2017. Leisure studies is to be scrapped as an A-level subject – but the sometimes ridiculed media studies will remain. The Office of Qualifications and Examinations Regulation (Ofqual) said a number of changes would be made to the list of A-levels and GCSEs by 2017.

 FR. Ce que prévoit la réforme du collège prévue pour la rentrée 2016

Le gouvernement s’attelle, mercredi 11 mars, à un exercice périlleux : étendre au second degré la « refondation de l’école » engagée en première partie de mandat. « Faire que le collège unique ne soit plus un collège uniforme », a souligné la ministre de l’éducation nationale, Najat Vallaud-Belkacem, en présentant son projet à la presse.

FR. Éducation : un nouveau collège en 2016

La ministre Najat Vallaud-Belkacem présente ce matin son projet de réforme du collège : interdisciplinarité et accompagnement personnalisé des élèves.

Après la refondation de l’école, l’Éducation nationale s’attaque au collège. Le chantier de sa réforme s’ouvre mercredi, avec la présentation du projet en conseil des ministres par Najat Vallaud-Belkacem. Le projet, qui concerne 3,2 millions de collégiens, sera discuté avec la communauté éducative pendant un mois, et entrera en vigueur à la rentrée 2016.

UK. Times Higher Education : un classement de réputation qui rebat les cartes

Les universités Paris 1, Paris 4, l’ENS, l’X et l’Institut Pasteur apparaissent dans le nouveau classement de réputation du “Times Higher Education”, paru le 11 mars 2015. Des établissements qui ne sont pas forcément dans le classement académique du même média. Réputation des universités : sur quels critères se base le THE ? Pour réaliser ce classement, le “Times Higher Education” a réalisé une enquête auprès d’universitaires du monde entier. Pour l’édition 2015, 10.507 réponses, en provenance de chercheurs faisant état de quinze années d’enseignement en moyenne, ont été récoltées. Le questionnaire consistait pour les professeurs à nommer les dix meilleures universités du monde en se fondant sur leur expérience et leurs connaissances de celles-ci.

FR. Il est temps de généraliser la sélection à l’université

D’un côté, des cursus élitistes de type grandes écoles ; de l’autre, des facs tenues d’accepter tout le monde. C’est avec ce système inégal qu’il faut rompre. La sélection est la seule façon de traiter avec dignité les étudiants.
